Ferrari 250 GTO rumored to have sold for $28.5 million

The going rate for vintage Ferraris seems to be at an all time high, as evidenced by the record sale of a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder back in May and the incredible selection of million dollar Ferraris at the RM Auction in Monterey this year. All of those are easily topped, however, by the rumored sale of a Ferrari 250 GTO for an incredible $28.5 million. Not much is known about the actual sale, since many of the high-dollar Ferrari transactions are done through private parties and not necessarily through an auction house. However, the knowledgeable members at FerrariChat.com have it on authority that the sale did happen. If anything, it gave us a chance to put together a huge gallery of 250 GTO photos from various concours and vintage racing events.

Connecticut Police seize rare stolen Ferrari 250 PF Cabrio

We're tying to figure out which is the greater nightmare scenario. On one side, you have a collector who had his ultra-rare and extremely valuable classic Ferrari stolen. On the other, you have another collector who had the same Ferrari seized by state troopers. One car, two collectors, and one very unfortunate set of circumstances. The car in question is a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series 1 Cabriolet, one of only 40 made. It was owned by a collector in Switzerland until it was stolen from a warehouse in Spain in 1993. The owner refused to collect compensation from the car's insurers, certain as he was that such a rare vehicle would turn up sooner or later. Fast forward fifteen years to the residence of Paul Hallingby in Sharon, Connecticut, where the Motor Vehicle Fraud Task Force of the Connecticut State Police showed up to take possession of the car. Hallingby, who paid over half a million for the car, now worth millions, is reportedly cooperating with the authorities. However, few details are known about the car's whereabouts in the intervening years except that it is believed to have been smuggled into the country through New Jersey where it was given a false Vehicle Identification Number. Hallingby is surely devastated, but the collector in Switzerland must be elated to be reunited with his baby after fifteen years.

Monterey 2008: Million dollar Ferraris at the RM Auction

The RM sports and classic car auction is one of our favorite events during the Monterey weekend. The laid back atmosphere and incredible selection of cars makes the event a perennial occurrence on our schedule. This year's event was particularly impressive, especially the selection of classic Ferraris. No less than eight surpassed the million dollar mark (seven actually sold), capped by the $4.51 million dollar sale of a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB. Others breaking $1 million were a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 ($1,925,000), 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe Aerodinamica, and a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder ($1,485,000). A beautiful 1956 Ferrari 250 GT TDF Berlinetta had a top bid of $3.9 million but didn't meet the reserve.

Ferrari California Spyder to be featured at Pebble Beach Concours

The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder is one of the most valuable classic Ferraris, as evidenced by the recent sale of one at auction for a record $10.8 million. To celebrate the Cal Spyder's 50th anniversary, the Pebble Beach Concours will have six different versions of the roadster on display on the 18th green this August. Most notably will be an aluminum-bodied competition version that raced at both Le Mans and Sebring. We will be bringing you live coverage from the Concours this year, and we'll be sure to take plenty of photographs. To whet your appetite, we've created a gallery of California Spyders that have been in the Concours over the past few years.
